Day 6 - Beach Bound
Travel day started early to a different airport for our flight to
Recife, Brazil for the last game in pool play vs Germany. The hotel in Recife was over an hour away from the airport and on the beach in a little town called Porto de Galinhas. That night we had a great meal in the downtown area. The delegation decided to push up our time to leave for the game to 8 am for the 1 pm game. They said it could be an hour or up to three hours to get to the game depending on traffic. We called it an early night.
Day 7 - Rain Rain Go Away
We woke up to heavy rain and a full delegation of German fans in the hotel lobby chanting and getting ready for the big game. A win or tie, and we advance to the knockout round. In the other game Portugal vs Ghana had different scenarios win or tie and the team with the most goals against differential would advance. Lots of great scenarios for advancement for the US team. The heavy rain started getting really bad that it was staring to flood the streets of Recife. The reports kept coming in that the bus was having trouble making it to the hotel. The bus arrival time to the game kept getting pushed back to eventually
not even arriving to the hotel until after the game was over! We all gathered around the TV and made the most of our situation and cheered the team on to a great game. We lost 1-0 and Portugal won 2-1 against Ghana but their goal differential loss to Germany in the first round was the deciding factor for the US to advance to back to back World Cup knockout rounds. We will play Belgium in the next round. We were only staying one night in Recife so after the game our bus arrived and we headed to the airport. The US delegation set up a great meal for all the families at a Churrascaria steakhouse before we flew back to São Paulo. Everyone was in great spirits with the advancement into the knockout round and celebrating. The talk throughout dinner was are you staying for the knockout round and/or what to do about flight changes. A great problem to have with entering the World Cup in the Group of Death that no one expected the US to advance. We finished up our meal and headed for the airport back to São Paulo. Our sixth flight in seven days!
Day 8 - Goodbye São Paulo
Our last day in São Paulo started with an opportunity for the families to watch the US team practice at the São Paulo Futbol Club training grounds and then a BBQ with all the players. This was neat to watch them train at the highest level after the Germany game and then preparing for Belgium. At the BBQ we had a chance to sit and eat with Kyle. The BBQ was of course Brazilian style with all different kinds of meat being brought around to all the tables. It was a nice way to end the trip with a great meal as a family. We said our goodbyes and headed back to the hotel. We had an hour to go shopping for presents for home before we left for the airport. We found some pretty cool gifts on the streets of São Paulo to bring back home. We then took the red-eye flight back to the states and completed the trip on our eighth flight in 10 days. We did a lot of traveling, but we enjoyed every bit of it and wouldn't have missed sharing this experience with Kyle and our family. Really excited to see the US play Belgium, Go USA!
