CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Brown wrestling program has been named as one of 12 finalists for the 2013-14 Best of Brand Top Newcomer Award as announced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) in coordination with Elite Level Sports Marketing (ELSM).
"We have a storied tradition here at Brown University with a program that has been around for over a 100 of years and we needed to tell our story," said Head Coach Todd Beckerman, who, along with his coaching staff, has spearheaded the team's social media efforts. "Social media is one of the easiest ways to tell that story with pictures, history and insight into our program. We had a lot of fun with promoting the team through social media this year on all our platforms and this is a great honor."
The programs that were announced as finalists by a committee are the following: Army, Brown, Eastern Michigan, Lehigh, Neosho, Old Dominion, Rider, Sacred Heart, Stanford, UW-Whitewater, Wayland Baptist, and Wheeling Jesuit.
One of Brown's most active teams on social media, Brown wrestling has over 2,600 likes on Facebook, over 1,500 followers on Twitter and over 500 followers on Instagram. Along with live video broadcasts of several home meets on Brownbears.tv via the Ivy League Digital Network, Brown fans and prospective student-athletes have been granted greater access to the wrestling team than ever before.
"Social media has been a huge recruiting tool because now it gave faces and names to our program," Beckerman said. "We wanted to give as much insight into our team for all our recruits to get a feel and understanding for Brown University, Brown wrestling throughout the season, the beautiful city of Providence, and our program. This is a great place that combines the best of both academics and athletics and we enjoyed sharing that through social media."
"Special congrats to all of the finalists in the Top Newcomer category," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "We are so pleased that programs have responded to our call to grow the sport through marketing."
The Top Newcomer award recognizes the program that made the biggest entrance into the social media scene during the 2013-2014 season. Finalists were determined by a panel that evaluated each program's effectiveness in three specific areas on social media platforms: content, visual appeal, and engagement.
"The Best of Brand field was extremely competitive this year with a wide range of new programs involved in social media marketing," said ELSM CEO Coyte Cooper. "The fact that we have so many entries indicates that we are continuing to grow our sport through a proactive branding approach at the grassroots level."
From this group of finalists, three will be named as top programs at the NWCA Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from August 1-3, 2014. The winner will be honored at a Best of Brand breakfast that focuses on highlighting the unique branding efforts implemented by programs.
