Bernstein Set to Compete in Third Straight NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday

2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Central

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Junior All-Ivy wrestler Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) takes to the mat for his third straight NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships appearance on Thursday when he competes in the opening round as the 12th seed in the 184-pound weight class at Chesapeake Energy Arena. First round action begins at 12 p.m.

Brown's winningest wrestler this season, Bernstein stands at 33-8 overall (12-1 in matches decided by fall) and is the first Brown wrestler to crack the 30-win mark for a single season since four-time NCAA Championships participant Bronson Lingamfelter went 31-7 in 2002. The co-captain ran his win streak to eight straight matches before falling in the EIWA Championships Semifinals last weekend, after which he rebounded with a pin and 6-0 decision to claim third place and an NCAA Championships berth. Bernstein holds an 85-34 (.714) record for his career.

FAMILIAR FOES

Bernstein is no stranger to his first-round foe, Zack Hernandez (23-11) of Columbia, after facing him three times this season, including twice at the EIWA Championships. Bernstein defeated his Ivy League rival, 6-3, in dual meet action on Feb. 23, then dismissed Hernandez twice by matching 6-0 scores at the EIWAs.

The championship field features no fewer than 13 opponents against whom Bernstein has wrestled this season. He owns an 8-7 record against those wrestlers, the breakdown of which can be seen here:

PROGRAM RECORDS AT STAKE

Bernstein closes in on a pair of Brown wrestling program records as he enters the championship field: single season wins and single season falls.

With 33 wins this year, Bernstein is just four victories away from tying the program mark of 37 set by All-Ivy and EIWA Outstanding Wrestler Steve Thoma in 1991-92 at 142 pounds.

Bernstein has also pinned 12 NCAA opponents this season, leaving him two falls shy of tying former All-American Tivon Abel's 14 falls which he set in 1994-95 in the 158-pound weight class.

BERNSTEIN RANKED NINTH AT 184

Bernstein ranks ninth in the country in the 184-pound weight class according to the latest NCAA RPI rankings and The Open Mat poll. He stands among the nation's elite in a handful of major polls, including Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (10th), InterMat (11th), FloWrestling (12th) and the NCAA Coaches Panel (13th).
