NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lions scored 33 team points for the second straight meet as the Brown wrestling team fell at Columbia University 33-9 in EIWA dual meet action at University Gym on Sunday. The Bears are now 3-11 overall while Columbia moves to 8-6 on the season.
Freshman Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) edged out a 3-2 decision at 149 to counter Matt Bystol's meet-opening pin at 141 that gave the Lions a rapid 6-0 lead. The hosts quickly took the next three bouts by major decision, however, and tripled their lead to 18-3 heading into the 184-pound weight class.
Junior captain Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) reliably worked to a 6-3 win at 184 to improve his team-best record to 28-7 on the season following six consecutive victories. An injury default awarded Columbia the points at 197, but freshman Ryder Cavey (Eldersburg, Md.) came back to shut out Wyatt Baker in the heavyweight bout, 5-0.
Leading 24-9, the Lions put away the final two matches with Penn Gottfried winning 10-3 at 125 and Angelo Amenta securing the fall at 133.
With dual meet season in the books, the Bears will travel to the NCAA-qualifying EIWA Championships at Penn University in two weeks. The first day of action is scheduled for Saturday, March 8.
