Lanzi Captures 165 Crown, Three Wrestlers Place in Top Three at Wilkes Open

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior Giuseppi Lanzi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) dominated the opposition en route to first place in the 165 pound weight class and led a trio of Brown wrestlers at the 81st annual Wilkes Open at Wilkes University on Saturday. Senior Vincent Moita (Clayton, Calif.) worked his way to the 125 pound weight class finals and placed second, while sophomore Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) took third at 197.

Lanzi set the tone early and pinned his first two opponents, including Steminto Rowe of Gloucester County College in a mere 23 seconds. The senior was then the victor over a pair of foes from host squad Wilkes before earning a trip to the finals with a commanding 9-1 decision over Adam DeJesus of Nassau Community College. Lanzi drew Nicholas Visicaro of Rutgers in the championship bout and prevailed, 9-7.

Moita etched out a pair of narrow victories to begin his day, topping Jaryd Flank, 15-14, and Anthony Rosamilia, 2-0. Tyler Walsh fell by a 17-4 score to send Moita to the finals, where he surrendered to Zachary Fuentes in a 13-4 decision.

Marker pinned Seth Gray of Wilkes in 4:30 to open up competition at 197, then topped Chris Chambers of Nassau, 8-1. Daniel Santoro of Princeton sent Marker to the wrestlebacks with a narrow 6-5 defeat, but Marker edged teammate Sebastien Levin, 4-3, for a bid to the third place match. The sophomore had it out for Joe Ariola of Buffalo and took third place with a 9-3 victory.

Seven Bears are slated to square off at the Midlands Championships tomorrow at Northwestern University. First session is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
