BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA – The Brown wrestling team (7-7. 2-5 EIWA) earned three solid individual victories and battled through one close match but ultimately fell, 27-16, to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (7-7, 3-4 EIWA) in today's EIWA match-up at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
The Bears grabbed an early lead over the home team, as junior Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, NJ), wrestling at 125 pounds, earned a major decision over Alex Abreu, 13-3, to put Brown up 6-0. The win was Watterson's 14th of the season, lifting his individual record to 14-13.
Lehigh quickly responded however, as Randy Cruz pinned Anthony Finocchiaro (Canastota, NY) just 1:18 into the 133-pound match, and the Mountain Hawks surged ahead when Anthony Salupo defeated Cortlandt Choate (Orwigsburg, PA), 5-3, at 141 pounds. The home team then won the next bout, before Philip Marano (Northampton, PA) took Lehigh's Albert Woody into a sudden victory period to earn a 3-1 triumph.
Giuseppi Lanzi (Amsterdam, NY) impeded Lehigh's momentum, grabbing six points for the Bears in the 165-pound weight class when he pinned Ben Haas at 6:58. The Mountain Hawks wrestled to victory in three of the last four weight classes to ultimately earn the 27-16 win, but Sterling Hecox (Harlem, IL) nabbed three points at 197-pounds with his 6-2 victory over John Bolich.
The Bears will make a short trip to Massachusetts on Saturday, February 16, taking on Ivy League and EIWA foe Harvard at 12:00pm in Cambridge, before matching up against the Terriers of Boston University at 3:00pm.
