Brown Crushes Rhode Island College, 40-6, After Falling to #6 Cornell, 35-6

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown wrestling team (6-3, 0-1 Ivy) spilt a pair of duals at the Pizzitola Sports Center this afternoon, falling to #6 Cornell (7-2, 2-0 Ivy) by a score of 35-6 before crushing the Rhode Island College Anchormen (5-13, 2-2 NEWA) in a 40-6 decision. Sophomore Sterling Hecox (Harlem, IL) was the Bears' lone double-winner, but several other wrestlers turned in impressive performances over the course of the afternoon.

Brown opened the day against Ivy League powerhouse Cornell, the sixth-ranked wrestling squad in the nation. While Hecox grabbed the Bears only triumph of the dual, pinning Jace Bennett in 1:35 at 197 pounds, several other members of the team produced gutsy performances against stiff competition. At 141 pounds, senior Cortlandt Choate (Orwigsburg, PA) led for much of his match, losing a close fight to Mike Nevinger, ranked sixth in the country in his weight class, in the last seconds. At 165 pounds, senior Jack Roberts (Union Grove, GA) proved his mettle in a loss to Kyle Dake, a three-time National champion and, currently, the top-ranked wrestler in the country in his weight class.

In Brown's second dual of the afternoon the squad earned a commanding victory over the Anchormen from Rhode Island College. While several Bears, including Hecox, won their matches by forfeit, others grappled to victory over the visitors. Wrestling at 125 pounds, junior Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, NY) snatched a 4-1 decision over Jonathan Murray in the first pairing of the afternoon, while senior Grant Overcashier (Goodrich, MI), fresh off a tough battle against Cornell's Chris Villalonga, defeated Alex LaBeef, 8-5. In Brown's final win of the day, sophomore Ricky McDonald (Carson City, NV) earned a major decision over Robert Sotelo, winning 11-1 to secure the Bears' 40-6 victory.

Brown will conclude its weekend of home competition with an evening match against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers on Sunday, January 20. Action on the mats will begin at 6:30pm in the PIzzitola Sports Center.
