LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – The Brown University wrestling team traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend to compete in the 31st annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on November 30 and December 1. The Bears joined 31 other teams in this prestigious competition, including Ivy League foes Harvard and Cornell.
The competition in the tournament was fierce, but several Bears triumphed over their opponents. Junior Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, NY), competing at 125 pounds, defeated Matthew Cavallaris of Wisconsin in the first round, 6-0, and then beat Aaron Pickrel in the wrestlebacks by medical forfeit. Senior Cortlandt Choate (Orwigsburg, PA) also won his first match in the wrestlebacks at 141 pounds, taking down Connor Hanafee of Army, 8-2.
In the 197 pound category, sophomore Sterling Hecox (Harlem, IL) had Brown's best run of the day. After losing in the first round, he went on a tear in the wrestlebacks, taking down Joseph Goodwin of Cal Poly, 11-1, and Joshua Mohr of the US Air Force Academy, 10-6. At 285 pounds, senior Marcos Aranda (Monument, NM) defeated Shawn Meyer of Nebraska-Kearney, 2-1, in the wrestlebacks.
The Bears will return to the mat for their first dual contest of the season on Saturday, December 8. They will take on Franklin and Marshall at 1:00pm in a home match, their last competition of the fall semester.
