Piscataway, N.J. – Despite taking on one of the top programs in the country on Friday, the Brown wrestling team put forth an impressive performance, taking four of nine matches from Rutgers on the road. Even though the squad was able to pick up four wins, the Bears fell 28-12. Brown also took on Rider at College Ave Gym, but were defeated 30-10.
"Against a top 20 team in Rutgers, we won four out of the nine matches contested. Billy had a big win over two-time NCAA Qualifier, Joe Langel and we also had three come from behind wins from Giuseppi, Pat and Ophir," said head coach Dave Amato. "Against Rider, we had another two great wins from Billy, while Ricky made his senior year debut and picked up a good win."
Sophomore Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) started the meet against Rutgers off with a huge win, defeated Joe Langel, 8-3 at 125. Langel has made two NCAA appearances in his career.
It was the sophomore class again at 157 as Giuseppi Lanzi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) took a tough victory, 6-3 over Dave Seidenberg.
Brown made it two in a row, takin the 165-pound weight class as well. Sophomore Pat Labuz (Drums, Pa.) had a close contest with Doug Hamann, but out-pointed him 16-14 to take the win.
Rookie Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) picked up the win at 184, defeating Dan Seidenberg, 2-1.
Watterson made it two-for-two on Friday, taking a 3-1 over Rider's Chuck Zeisloft, while senior Ricky Bailey (Palmayra, N.J.) made his season debut and defeated Connor Brennan at 149, 8-6.
Bernstein also went undefeated on the day, earning a majority decision win over Brandon Lintner at 184, 9-0.
Brown will be back in action Saturday, January 7 with dual matches against Franklin & Marshall and Millersville.
