  • Bernstein Tabbed as One of the Top Rookie Wrestlers by Amateur Wrestling News

    The honors and accolades continue to pile up for freshman wrestler Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas). After qualifying for the NCAA Championship after tallying 27 regular season wins, the rookie was named Brown University’s Most Outstanding First-Year Male Student-Athlete. Bernstein has now been honored by Amateur Wrestling News as one of the top rookies in the county.

Over 170 student-athletes, representing Brown’s 37 intercollegiate sports, along with coaches and distinguished guests, were in attendance at the banquet to celebrate an exceptional year of success on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community.

    Head coach Dave Amato and the Brown University wrestling team has announced its class of 2016, consisting of five distinguished student-athletes: Will VanDoren (Delaware Valley, N.J.), Gus Marker (Castle View, Colo.), Sami Baghdady (Belmont, Mass.), Anthony Finocchiaro (Canastota, New York), and Austin Rugraff (St. Charles West, Mo.).

    The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has announced its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 Teams and the NWCA Individual All-Academic wrestling team for the 2011-12 wrestling season and both the Brown wrestling program and sophomore standout Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) received honors.
  • Dave Foxen Earns Winter Academic All-Ivy Honors

    The Ivy League released its winter list of Academic All-Ivy honorees, with 10 Brown student-athletes being recognized. The five males and five females were starters or key reserves on their respective varsity athlete teams and carry a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average.
  • 2011-12 Brown Wrestling Season Comes to a Close at NCAA Championship

    Senior wrestler Dave Foxen (Garden City, N.Y.) completed an illustrious career at Brown University on Thursday, competing in two matches at the NCAA Division I Championship, hosted by Missouri. Rookie Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) capped his impressive first season with the Bears, also wrestling in two bouts. Both wrestlers went 0-2. Brown wrestling returned to the NCAA Championship in 2012 for the first time since 2010, and sent two wrestlers to the tournament for the first time since the Bears sent three in 2008.

    Brown University will be represented at the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship at the Scottrade Center, as two wrestlers have qualified for the annual tournament. Senior Dave Foxen (Garden City, N.Y.), who won the EIWA Championship at 174 pounds, and rookie Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas), who will wrestle at 184, will wrestle the Bears at the three-day event hosted by Missouri.

    Senior wrestler Dave Foxen (Garden City, N.Y.) did something that had not happened since 1963 at the EIWA Championships, winning the 174 pound weight class as an unseeded wrestler. His performance helped the Bears to a 10th-place team finish at the 2012 tournament, hosted by Princeton at Jadwyn Gym.

    Four Brown wrestlers advanced to the semifinals on Saturday at the EIWA Championships, hosted by Princeton. Senior Dave Foxen (Garden City, N.Y.) is in the championship bout at 174 pounds, while sophomore Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and rookie Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) battled their way to the semifinals. Freshman Zachary Tannenbaum (Leawood, Kan.) fought his way to the seventh-place match.
  • Brown Wrestling Heads To Princeton for the EIWA Championships

    The Brown wrestling team faces its largest challenge of the season this weekend, when they head to Princeton, N.J., for the EIWA Championships on Saturday and Sunday. The Bears will take on Cornell, Princeton, Harvard, Penn, American, Bucknell, Rutgers, Army, Navy, Lehigh, Sacred Heart and Franklin & Marshall. The action kicks off at 8 a.m. on March 3 at Jadwin Gym.
  • Four Brown Wrestlers Earn All-Ivy Honors

    The Ivy League has announced the 2011-12 All-Conference teams for wrestling and four Brown student-athletes have garnered All-Ivy recognition. Sophomore Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and senior Dave Foxen (Garden City, N.Y.) were named to the All-Ivy Second Team, while rookies Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) and Sterling Hecox (Loves Park, Ill.) earned Honorable Mention distinctions.

    The Brown wrestling team, coming off of a big win against Harvard last weekend, started off another Ivy League weekend, this time on the road at Columbia, with a win, as sophomore Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) gave Brown an early lead, but the Lions quickly regrouped and took the next nine bouts on their way to a 34-4 victory.

    The Brown wrestling team was back in action on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center, picking up an all-important win over Ivy League-rival Harvard, 22-17, before falling to No. 15 Lehigh, 35-3.

    The Brown wrestling team got back on the winning track on Friday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center, downing both Boston University and Roger Williams in dual meets. The Bears picked up a big victory over the Terriers, 19-16, before dominating the Hawks, 41-9.

    The Brown wrestling team hosted two duals on Saturday, taking on Ivy League rival Penn and Drexel. Six individual wrestlers picked up victories at the Pizzitola Sports Center, but the Bears were edged by Drexel, 23-13, before being topped by Penn, 30-7.
  • Brown Wrestling Picks up Ivy League Win Over Princeton

    The Brown wrestling team picked up a 28-21 Ivy League win on Friday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center, defeating Princeton. The Bears came from behind, trailing 17-4 after five matches, but took the next three matches, all by pin, to take control of the dual. Bruno totaled five wins on the day.

    The Brown wrestling team warmed up the Pizzitola Center on Saturday with three dual matches against Army, Rhode Island College and Johnson & Wales, prior to the men’s basketball team’s showdown against No. 23 Harvard. The Bears were edged by the Black Knights, 24-15, before topping RIC, 30-12, and JWU, 26-15.
  • Brown Wrestling Takes Day to Teach Elementary School In Woonsocket

    Despite being in the middle of their season, coming off a road test at No. 3 Cornell and looking forward to its first home meet of the season this weekend, the Brown wrestling team took off on Monday to travel to Woonsocket to teach elementary school as part of Junior Achievement.

    The Brown men’s wrestling team had its second matchup in as many days, taking on one of the nation’s top teams in No. 5 Cornell on Satruday afternoon. The Bears were able to pick up two wins in the dual meet and saw three others narrowly decided. Despite some impressive performances, the Bears were topped 36-6.
  • Brown Dominates Sacred Heart, 41-0

    The Bears started their weekend strong on Friday afternoon at Sacred Heart, downing the Pioneers 41-0 in Fairfield, Conn. Every wrestler for Brown (3-5, 2-1 EIWA) was victorious as sophomore Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.), senior Dave Foxen (Garden City, N.Y.) and junior Marcos Aranda (Monument, N.M.) all picked up pin fall wins.
  • Lone Star Duals a Homecoming for Rookie Wrestler Ophir Bernstein

    After a strong start to 2012, including taking four matches from nationally-ranked Rutgers, the Brown wrestling team is heading to Grand Prarie, Texas for the Lone Star Duals on Saturday, January 14. It will serve as a homecoming for rookie Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) who will have his first chance to wrestle as a collegian in front of family and friends.
  • Brown Competes at 15th Annual Lone Star Duals

    Brown competed at the 15th annual Lone Star Duals on Saturday, the premier wrestling event in the state of Texas. The Bears took on some tough competition and despite several strong individual performances, Bruno fell to Air Force (33-16), Appalachian State (41-4) and UT-Chattanooga (37- 3).
  • Bears Victorious Over Franklin & Marshall and Millersville

    The Brown wrestling team concluded a whirlwind road weekend on Saturday at Franklin & Marshall and Millersville. After a tough Friday night against No. 16 Rutgers and Rider, Brown got back on the winning track, defeating the Diplomats 30-17, before downing Marauders 32-15.
  • Brown Takes Four Matches Against No. 16 Rutgers

    Despite taking on one of the top programs in the country on Friday, the Brown wrestling team put forth an impressive performance, taking four of nine matches from Rutgers on the road. Even though the squad was able to pick up four wins, the Bears fell 28-12. Brown also took on Rider at College Ave Gym, but were defeated 30-10.
  • Brown Competes at the Cliff Keen Invitational

    The Brown wrestling team spent the weekend at the 30th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center, competing against over 30 teams. Even though the Bears entered the tournament with a short roster, missing two usual starters, several young members of the team gained valuable experience, highlighted by rookie Ophir Bernstein’s (Allen, Texas) seventh-place finish.
  • Hecox Paces Brown at Keystone Classic

    Brown wrestling competed at the annual Keystone Classic hosted by Penn in the historic Palestra on Sunday and finished night overall against Penn, American, Appalachian State, Boston University, Duke, Harvard, Northwestern, Princeton, Rider and Virginia Military Institute. Freshman Sterling Hecox (Loves Park, Ill.) led the Bears with a second-place finish.
  • Bears Start Season at Binghamton Open

    The Brown wrestling team opened their season on Sunday at the 2011 Binghamton Bearcat Open and were led by freshman Sterling Hecox (Loves Park, Ill.), who placed third overall at the 197 lbs weight class. The Bears also boasted two wrestlers which placed in sophomore Giuseppi Lanzi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and junior Zack Kulzycki (Urbana, Ill.).
