Omaha, NE - Freshman Cortlandt Choate (Orwigsburg, PA) traveled to Omaha to compete in the NCAA Championships over the weekend, losing a pair of bouts despite putting up solid efforts in both. Choate qualified for the NCAA's by turning in an impressive performance at the EIWA Tournament, where he tore through the wrestlebacks to earn a spot in Omaha.
Choate began the NCAA Tournament against #10 Nicholas Fanthorpe of Iowa State, one of the premier wrestling programs in the country. Though he hung in with Fanthorpe initially, the Cyclone showed why he was seeded so highly, and pulled away for a 14-3 major decision. In the wrestlebacks, Choate next squared off against Arizona State's Ben Ashmore. This time, the bout turned into a close, hard-fought contest, but Ashmore was able to hold on for a 5-2 decision, eliminating Choate from the tournament.
