Wrestling Earns Home Split Against Boston University and Drexel
Providence, R.I. - The Bears earned a home split against Boston University and Drexel on Friday afternoon, knocking off the Terriers by a 28-12 margin before falling to the Dragons by a final tally of 27-9. Sophomore Jeff Lemmer and senior Branden Stearns led the way for Bruno, as each won a pair of bouts to help Brown pick up its third win of the season in front of the Pizzitola Center crowd.
Brown opened the day against visiting Boston University, and the Bears came out firing in the early weight classes. Senior Greg Einfrank took an opening 13-7 decision at 125, coming up just shy of a major decision. That was then followed by another winning decision by sophomore T.J. Popolizio, who took a 6-4 match over Boston's Fred Santaite.
The Terriers took back some momentum at 141 though, earning a fall to pull the score even at six apiece. Phil Marano and Bryan Tracy then dropped back-to-back decisions, losing 8-3 and 7-6 at 149 and 157 respectively, as Boston University appeared ready to take control of the match.
Trailing 12-6, however, sophomore Jeff Lemmer turned in perhaps the most exciting match of the day in a pivotal 165 bout. Clinging to a narrow one-point lead heading into the third period, Lemmer started in the bottom position, and gave up nearly two minutes of riding time to the Terrier's Kyle Czarnecki. With Czarnecki poised to gain a point for riding time and Lemmer visibly tiring, it appeared that the bout was headed for overtime. However, Lemmer summoned a final burst, and escaped with just nine seconds remaining, earning an additional point and securing the 7-6 win.
From that point on, the Bears would not lose another match, as each wrestler continued building on the momentum created by Lemmer. Sophomore Ziad Kharbush earned a 10-2 major decision, followed by a six-point win by forfeit for senior Bran Crudden. Classmate Branden Stearns then followed with a 2-0 decision before rookie Tyler Cowman wrapped up the action with a fall in 6:55, earning the Bears a 28-12 comeback victory.
In the afternoon match, the Bears squared off against a strong Drexel squad, beginning with a high-scoring 125 match, in which the Dragons' Michael Gomez just edged Einfrank by a 13-11 margin. Drexel continued pushing at 133, as Piccirillo lost on a fall in 5:21.
After a major decision loss by T.J. Popolizio in the 141 class, rookie Phil Marano regained some momentum for Brown at 149, winning a thrilling bout against Drexel's Brett McCurdy 4-3. That was followed by another major decision at 157, as senior Bryan Tracy fell by a 20-6 margin.
At 165, Lemmer took his second win of the day, again in exciting fashion. In a back-and-forth bout, Lemmer emerged as the winner by just a point, taking a 7-6 victory. The Dragons then took a pair of decisions at 174 and 184, as Kharbush and Crudden narrowly lost by 3-1 and 2-0 margins respectively.
In the 197 class, Stearns continued his strong dual season with a convincing win over Jack Callendar of the Dragons. Stearns took the victory handily, pulling away to take a 10-5 decision. The match then wrapped up with a 13-3 major decision by Drexel's Kyle Frye, knocking off rookie Tyler Cowman of the Bears.
Brown will be back in action tomorrow morning, as the team continues its homestand with a pair of Ivy matches against Penn at 11:00 a.m. and Princeton at 3:00 p.m.
