No. 15 Men's Water Polo's Rally Comes Up Short vs. No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer, 7-6

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Rico Burke scored two goals and tied the game at 6-6 with 1:36 to play, but No. 15 Brown fell to No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer, 7-6, on Sunday afternoon in its fourth game at the Harvard Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Blodgett Pool.

Trailing 6-3 in the fourth quarter, the Bears (11-9) used a 3-0 run to knot the score at 6-6, including the game-tying goal from Burke (San Mateo, Calif.), but the Sagehens (12-9) – the No. 1 ranked team in Division III – netted the game-winning goal with 1:06 left. Pomona-Pitzer has now won 10 of its last 11 games.

For the Bears, seniors Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.), Austin Hwang (Laguna Hills, Calif.), and Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) and junior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) each registered one goal.

Kirchberg tacked on three assists, two steals, and three field blocks, and Bush contributed three assists and three ejections drawn.

Freshman goalie Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made five saves in the first half, and junior net-minder Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) stopped five shots in the second half.

After the Saghens posted the only two goals of the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead, Hwang put the Bears on the board in the second quarter to cut the score to 2-1. P-P scored the stanza's only other goal to gain a 3-1 edge at halftime.

Following a Pomona-Pitzer marker to start the third quarter, Burke and Bouscaren charted back-to-back tallies to trim the Sagehens' margin to 4-3 midway through the period. P-P scored once more in the third to bring a 5-3 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead to 6-3 early in the fourth quarter before Brown began its 3-0 run. Bush started the streak with a goal at the 5:20 mark prior to a tally from Kirchberg with 2:27 to play. Burked scored an equalizer with 1:36 remaining, but Pomona-Pitzer re-took the lead with 1:06 to go.

A total of 10 goals have decided Brown's last nine games with the Bears posting a 4-5 record during that span.

Next, Brown heads to the state of California to play in the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament with games against No. 17 Cal Baptist (Oct. 20, 5:20 p.m. ET), Loyola Marymount (Oct. 21, 1:20 p.m. ET), Santa Clara (Oct. 21, 6:40 p.m. ET), and Fresno Pacific (Oct. 22, noon ET).
