Irwin’s Four Goals Push No. 12 Men’s Water Polo Past Iona, 15-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Luke Irwin scored four goals to lead No. 12 Brown University men's water polo to a 15-5 win over Iona College in a Northeast Water Polo Conference game at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Friday night.

The Bears (19-7, 6-2 NWPC) netted the game's first nine goals en route to the win over the visiting Gaels (9-18, 1-7 NWPC).

In support of Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), senior Warren Smith (Dallas, Texas) and freshman Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) each posted two goals.

Seven different Bears – senior Yahel Murvitz-Lahav (Tel Aviv, Israel), juniors Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) and Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.), sophomores Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mas.) and Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.), and freshmen Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Jack Wilson (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) – tallied one goal apiece.

Kirchberg added a team-high three assists while junior Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.) tacked on two assists. Rawlings posted two ejections drawn and two steals, Murvitz-Lahav drew two ejections, Wilson made three steals, and Deirmenjian chipped in two steals.

In the cage, senior goalkeeper Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) made four saves in the first half while sophomore net-minder Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) turned aside seven shots in the second half.

Prior to the game, Brown honored its five seniors – Irwin, Murvitz-Lahav, Smith, Weiser, and Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) – for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years.

The Bears shut out the Gaels in the first quarter, winning the frame 6-0. Irwin started the period with three straight goals inside of the contest's first 2:35. Smith, Nunez, and Rawlings followed in order with goals.

After Irwin scored his fourth goal of the game early in the second quarter, Wilson and Rawlings proceeded to find the back of the net to put Brown up 9-0. Brown almost kept a clean sheet for the entire half before Iona notched a marker with 15 seconds to play in the second quarter.

Burke opened the third quarter's scoring before a pair of Iona goals made it 10-3. After a tally from Smith, the Gaels registered another two goals, including a 5-meter penalty shot, to pull within 11-5. A goal from Deirmenjian gave Brown a 12-5 edge heading to the fourth frame.

Murvitz-Lahav initiated the fourth's scoring with a 5-meter penalty prior to markers from Kirchberg and Bouscaren as Brown claimed the final quarter, 3-0.

Brown swept the season series with the Gaels after beating Iona, 11-9, on Oct. 2 in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Next, Brown concludes the regular season tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 6, with home NWPC games against No. 20 St. Francis Brooklyn (10:00 a.m.) and No. 10 Princeton (2:30 p.m.).
