NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Luke Irwin and junior Tyler Kirchberg each scored three goals to lead No. 10 Brown University men's water polo to a 16-8 win over Connecticut College in a non-conference game at Lott Natatorium on Wednesday night.
The Bears (17-6) outscored the host Camels (9-14) – the CWPA Division III Championship runner-ups – in all four quarters, including a 5-2 first frame and a 4-1 third stanza, en route to the win. Brown swept the season series after beating Conn. College, 16-6, on Sept. 28 in Providence, R.I.
Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) paced four multiple-goal scorers for the Bears with their hat tricks. Junior Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.) and sophomore Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) each netted two goals.
Juniors Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) and Austin Hwang (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and freshmen Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.), Galen Hu (Colleyville, Texas), Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.), and James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted one goal apiece, rounding out Brown's 10 goal scorers.
Sophomore Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) dished out a team-best three assists with two steals. Kirchberg and Bush added two assists and two ejections drawn apiece. Irwin and Deirmenjian tacked on three and two ejections drawn respectively.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) made 11 saves.
After the Camels scored the game's first goal, the Bears notched five consecutive goals to pull ahead 5-1. Thygesen, Deirmenjian, Burke, Bush, and Rawlings netted tallies for Brown in order. Conn. College trimmed their deficit to 5-2 heading to the second quarter.
Hu initiated the second period's scoring before Conn. College landed a pair of goals to pull within 6-4. Kirchberg answered prior to another Camel goal. Irwin and Bush closed out the first half's scoring to give Brown a 9-5 edge at halftime.
Kirchberg and Irwin accounted for all four of Brown's goals in the third quarter to push the visitors ahead 13-6 through three frames. Kirchberg found the back of the net twice before a Conn. College marker. Irwin proceeded to register the stanza's final two goals.
Conn. College netted the first two goals of the fourth quarter, but Bouscaren responded with a pair of tallies of his own to keep Brown ahead 15-8. Hwang tallied the contest's final goal with under two minutes to play.
Next, Brown opens the second half of its Northeast Water Polo Conference schedule with home games on Saturday against No. 13 Harvard (1:00 p.m.) and MIT (6:00 p.m.) at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
