PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 13 Brown University men's water polo downed Santa Clara University, 12-10, prior to falling to No. 5 University of the Pacific, 16-5, at the Princeton Invitational on Sunday at DeNunzio Pool.
The Bears (6-3) gained a 10-6 lead through three quarters on the Broncos (2-2) en route to the win in the team's first game of the day before dropping the decision to the Tigers (8-1), winners of their last 49 straight non-conference games.
Next, Brown opens up CWPA Northern Division play on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Harvard (2:30 p.m.) and at No. 20 MIT (8:30 p.m.).
Game 1 – No. 13 Brown 12, Santa Clara 10
Gallas and Murvitz-Lahav combined for nine goals as No. 13 Brown beat Santa Clara, 12-10, on Sunday morning.
Juniors Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Warren Smith (Dallas, Texas) as well as sophomore Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) each netted one goal. Freshman goalkeeper Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) made six saves in the win.
The Bears opened the contest with a 3-1 lead at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter as Murvitz-Lahav, Smith, and Gallas each found the back of the net. After Santa Clara tied it at 3-3, Irwin and Gallas each posted a goal to give Brown a 5-3 edge after one period.
Brown pushed its lead to 7-4 at the half behind a goal from Murvitz-Lahav and a marker from Burke with 1:13 to play in the second stanza.
Murvitz-Lahav opened the second half's scoring, and a tally from Gallas with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter extended Brown's edge to 9-4. The Broncos cut their deficit to 9-6 before Gallas logged another goal as Brown took a 10-6 advantage to the fourth frame.
In the final quarter, Murvitz-Lahav put Brown up 11-8, but Santa Clara pulled within 11-10 with 58 seconds remaining. Gallas' fifth goal with 33 seconds left provided the Bears with insurance.

Game 2 – No. 5 Pacific 16, No. 13 Brown 5
Burke scored twice, and No. 13 Brown remained within six goals after the second and third quarters before No. 5 Pacific gained separation in a 16-5 win in Brown's second game of the day.
Senior Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) and freshmen Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) and Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) netted one goal apiece. In goal, junior Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) turned aside 10 shots.
Brown took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Klein before Pacific scored twice. A marker from Bouscaren knotted the score at 2-2 at the 4:23 mark of the first quarter. The Tigers recorded the period's next three goals to take a 5-2 edge at the end of the first period.
Pacific went up 6-2 before a goal from Burke trimmed the Bears' deficit to 6-3 just over two minutes into the second stanza. The Tigers grabbed an 8-3 lead prior to a 6-on-5 goal from Nunez and brought a 10-4 advantage into the intermission.
Each side netted just one goal in the third quarter with Burke's marker with 2:28 to play in the period pulling the Bears within 11-5 heading into the fourth quarter. The Tigers charted all five of the final frame's tallies.
