SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior Henry Fox and junior Matty Gallas each scored five goals as No. 14 Brown University men's water polo defeated No. 19 California Baptist University, 15-10, on the first day of the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Friday night at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
The Bears (15-5) outscored the Lancers (13-12), 9-2, over a span stretching from midway through the first quarter to the third quarter, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 10-4 advantage.
Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) and Gallas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) posted three goals apiece during the Bears' decisive stretch.
Junior Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.), sophomore Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), and freshmen Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.), Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.), and Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) rounded out Brown's scoring with one goal each. Kirchberg added four assists as did sophomore Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.), and Klein drew five exclusions.
Sophomore Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) made 12 saves in goal for Brown.
After falling into a 2-1 hole, the Bears scored twice more over the remainder of the first period to take a 3-2 lead.
Brown netted three goals compared to one for Cal Baptist over the second quarter's first seven minutes before both teams scored inside of the final 38 seconds to give the Bears an 8-4 edge through two frames.
The Bears maintained at least a four-goal lead throughout the third stanza bringing a 12-6 advantage into the final quarter. Cal Baptist recorded its last goal with three seconds on the clock for the final.
Next, Brown continues play at "The Rodeo" tomorrow with games against tournament-host Santa Clara (Noon ET) and UC Davis (7 p.m. ET).
