Men’s Water Polo Unveils 2014 Schedule
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On the coattails of a third-straight 20-win season, Brown men's water polo Head Coach Felix Mercado has announced the Bears' schedule for the upcoming 2014 campaign.
Brown's schedule features 24 regular season games and three tournaments: the Princeton Invitational, the Bruno Fall Classic and the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif. The Bears will battle for Ivy League bragging rights at the Ivy Championships in October, and Collegiate Water Polo Association supremacy will be decided at the Northern Division Championships and CWPA Championships in November.
Tournament action occupies the first 10 games of Brown's schedule as the Bears open the season with five contests at the Princeton Invitational on Sep. 6-7. A week later, Brown hosts the Bruno Fall Classic, playing five games over three days. The event features UC Irvine and Cal Baptist, who finished 2013 ranked eighth and receiving votes, respectively, in the CWPA Varsity Top 20 poll.
Brown dives into CWPA Northern Division play on Sep. 20 with a doubleheader against Iona and Fordham. The next day, the Bears seek revenge against No. 10 St. Francis Brooklyn after the Terriers defeated Brown four times last season, twice by a single goal.
The Bears then play their next four games against MIT and Harvard, first on the road on Sep. 28 and then at home on Oct. 11. Brown topped the Engineers by a score of 10-9 last season to take third at the CWPA Northern Division Championships and earn a bid to the Eastern Championships. The Bears later grabbed fifth place at Easterns with a 15-9 victory over the Crimson.
Following a Northern Division tilt at Connecticut College on Oct. 12, Brown takes on the best of the Ancient Eight at the Ivy Championships on Oct. 18-19. The West Coast comes calling for several non-conference games on Oct. 24-26 at the Bronco Invitational at Santa Clara, followed by league contests against Connecticut College (Oct. 29) and at Iona (Nov. 1) and St. Francis Brooklyn (Nov. 2).
The Bears head to Cambridge, Mass., for the CWPA Northern Division Championships on Nov. 8-9 when they will fight for a bid to the CWPA Championships. The league's tournament will be held at Navy on Nov. 21-23.
