Coach Mercado Elected President of Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown water polo Head Coach Felix Mercado has been elected President of the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches, it was announced by ACWPC Executive Director Larry Sanders on Monday.

"I'm excited to fill this position and feel that as an association, we can accomplish plenty," Mercado said. "I look forward to working with my fellow coaches to continue to improve our great sport at the collegiate level."

"The ACWPC in moving forward with its mission of providing the college coaches a voice in support of their sport. To this end we are excited to welcome aboard our new President Felix Mercado, Head Coach of men and women's water polo at Brown University," Sanders said. "We are thrilled to have a person of Coach Mercado's caliber serving as our new president. We believe Coach Mercado's passion for water polo will transfer to the ACWPC as he helps us move forward in providing a greater voice to college water polo coaches."



Mercado recently led the No. 19 Brown men's water polo team to its third straight 20-plus win season that culminated in a 15-9 victory over Harvard to earn fifth place at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Eastern Championships. In his seventh season at the helm of the Bears, Mercado mentored two CWPA Northern Division First Team picks in senior James McNamara (Encino, Calif.) and junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.).

Mercado and the women's water polo team open the 2014 competitive season on Feb. 1 when the Bears host the two-day Brown Invitational at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

The ACWPC is an association created by coaches for coaches.  It is our ultimate goal to see the ACWPC grow into a community for collegiate water polo coaches to build the sport and grow as professional coaches. The more coaches put into the association, the better it becomes and the further its influence will reach into the world of athletics and water polo.

The mission of the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches is to promote the development and advancement of collegiate water polo through supporting the coach.  This shall be accomplished by providing its membership with professional education, services, training and a united voice.
