CBU 2 2 0 0 - 4
Brown 3 1 1 0 - 5
Goals: McNamara 3, Fox 2
Saves: Shockley 11
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior James McNamara (Encino, Calif.) fired in three goals, including two in the decisive first frame, to drive the No. 20 Brown men's water polo team to a 5-4 victory over No. 17 Cal Baptist in a defensive-minded opening game of the Rodeo Tournament at Santa Clara University on Friday. The Bears climb to 15-10 overall and the Lancers slip to 13-11.
Junior Henry Fox (Mercer Island, Wash.) tallied a pair of goals and senior goalie Walker Shockley (Diamond Bar, Calif.) piled up 11 saves to blank Cal Baptist in the second half. Junior Nick Deaver (Orinda, Calif.) grabbed four steals to spearhead Brown's defensive effort of 15 total swipes.
McNamara and Fox teamed up for a streak of three unanswered goals to put the Bears up 3-0 in the first quarter, which proved essential as both sides struggled to convert scoring opportunities the rest of the way. The Lancers drew 10 ejections and converted just one six-on-five opportunity, while Brown went scoreless on all four man-up chances.
Fox struck midway through the second frame to put the Bears up 4-2, but Cal Baptist slung in two more, including the tying goal by Eric Carnohan with five seconds left in the half to knot the score at 4-4.
Brown survived a pair of shorthanded stretches in the third and McNamara popped in the go-ahead goal with 2:05 left in the quarter. A combined five draw ejections went by without a score in the fourth, allowing Brown to sneak away with the narrow 5-4 win.
The Bears return to tournament action on Saturday with a pair of non-conference contests against nationally-ranked opponents. Brown takes on No. 10 Concordia (Calif.) at 3 p.m. EST and No. 16 Santa Clara at 7 p.m. EST.
