PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – Felix Mercado, the head coach of Brown University's men's water polo team, has recently announced the Bears' 2013 schedule. The squad will play in three tournaments and face each of their CWPA Northern opponents on two separate occasions. They will also vie for a trio of championships, taking on the Ivy League, the CWPA Northern Division and the CWPA Eastern Division in the quest for a bid to the 2013 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championships.
"This schedule allows us to play some of the most competitive teams in the country," said Mercado. "With Stanford, Pacific and UC Irvine coming to our invitationals, we will be competing at a high level. Add to that the Santa Clara tournament and our own divisional games, and we should be in position to be ready to compete at the CWPA Eastern Championships, which we are hosting this year."
Brown will open its season with two home tournaments at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center - the Bruno Fall Classic on September 7th and 8th and the Bruno Fall Invitational, held from September 13th to 15th. Each of these competitions will showcase some of the best water polo teams in the country, as they descend on College Hill to kick-off the year with high-level matchups.
The Bears will then begin their CWPA Northern schedule with five consecutive road games, starting on September 21st when they take on the St. Francis Terriers at 2pm before heading to Fordham for a 7pm matchup with the Rams. Brown will complete its weekend in New York with a 12pm game at Iona on September 22nd. The team will then make the short trip to Cambridge on September 28th, visiting MIT's Zesiger Aquatics Center for a 12pm game and Harvard's Blodgett Pool for a 9pm contest.
Six home games will take the Bears into mid-October, as the team returns to Providence to take on the Connecticut College Camels at 7:30pm on October 4th. The squad will play back-to-back games on October 5th, squaring off against MIT at 12pm and St. Francis 7pm, and will welcome Harvard, its Ivy League rival, to Brown for a 7:30pm game on October 11th. The two-weekend home stand concludes on October 12th, when the Bears battle Fordham at 2pm and Iona at 7pm.
On Sunday, October 20th, the squad will head to Penn's Sheerr Pool to battle for the 2013 Ivy Championship. The Bears will be joined by squads from the seven other Ancient Eight schools for the one-day tournament and the rights to the title.
After its final CWPA Northern regular season game against Connecticut College at 7:30pm on October 23rd, Brown will head to the West Coast from October 25th to 27th for the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. After fine-tuning their skills against some of California's best, the squad will head back to the East Coast to gear up for the post season.
This year's CWPA Northern Divisional Championships will be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts at Harvard's Blodgett Pool. The Bears will battle for that title on November 9th and 10th and will then wait for their seed in the CWPA Eastern Championships, held from November 22nd to the 24th at Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. The winner of the competition earns an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championships, held from December 6th to December 8th.
