PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND - The ACWPC All-Academic Awards were released last week, and the Brown men's water polo team averaged a 3.370 GPA to rank fifth in the country. Additionally, the team placed 14 student-athletes on the list of honorees, as each was granted with an All-Academic award. California Institute of Technology earned the top ranking with a 3.570, followed by St. Francis (3.520), Stanford (3.450) and Harvard (3.371).
"It's great to see our program have so many honored for their work in the classroom," said head coach Felix Mercado. "We continue to make being a student-athlete a priority, and it showed both in and out of the pool. To maintain a top five national academic ranking for the last seven years has been a great accomplishment, as we continue to build a top 20 program year in and year out."
The ACWPC honors varsity and club student-athletes who have achieved a grade point average of 3.2 or higher and competed during the 2012 season. Brown's top academic performers, seniors Dean Serure (Coral Gables, FL) and Cyrus Mojdehi (La Jolla, CA), earned Outstanding honors for maintaining a GPA between 3.71 and 4.00, while junior Grant Villeneuve (Atherton, CA), freshman Will Klein (Pasadena, CA), senior Bryan Russell (Arcadia, CA) and junior Eric Robb (Winnetka, IL) earned Superior honors with GPAs between 3.41 and 3.70. Eight Bears earned Excellent accolades, as their GPAs fell between 3.25 and 3.40, including sophomore Henry Fox (Mercer Island, WA), junior Chris Culin (Cincinnati, OH), senior Ryan Gladych (Corona Del Mar, CA), senior Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia), sophomore Nick Deaver (Orinda, CA), senior Michael Hartwick (Los Angeles, CA), junior James McNamara (Los Angles, CA) and junior Walker Shockley (Diamond Bar, CA).
