Bears Sink Harvard, 23-9 to Claim No. 1 Seed at Northern Division Championships

Providence, RI- The No. 12 ranked Brown University men's water polo team earned a 23-9 victory over Harvard on Thursday night at Blodgett Pool to capture the No. 1 seed at the Northern Division Championships and earn a spot at the Eastern Championships.

"It's nice to clinch a spot at Easterns, but we still have a lot of work to do," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "We allowed nine goals and that is not a sign of the defense the team needs to play. We will get back to the drawing board and prepare for our annual trip to Santa Clara."

James McNamara led the Bears offense with a game-high six goals, five steals and three assists in Brown's 14-goal win. Bruno roared out to a 7-4 lead after the first eight minutes, and went on a 13-4 run in the next two quarters to take a 20-8 lead. Brown then knocked in three goals in the fourth and held Harvard to one to earn the victory.

Adding to the offense was Nick Deaver and Henry Fox with four goals each, followed by Svetozar Stefanovic with three. Will Klein, who added one goal, also handed out five assists and picked up two steals. Matty Gallas and Dean Serure put in two goals, while Mojdehi added one. As a team, the Bears tallied a season-high 17 steals.

Walker Shockley played three quarters in goal and posted five saves for the Bears, and Andrew Brown earned two in the final quarter.

The Bears will now head out west from Oct. 19-21 to compete in the Santa Clara Invitational.
