CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Filip Sasic (Sr., Zagreb, Croatia/Titus Brezouazki) scored four times to earn Player of the Game honros, and five other Terriers added pairs of goals, as No. 16 St. Francis College beat No. 18 Brown University 16-10 in the third place game of the 2011 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship at Harvard University's Blodgett Pool.
It marked SFC's fourth win over the Bears this year as St. Francis knocked off Brown 11-7 OT and 16-7 during the regular season, before posting an 11-10 victory in triple sudden death overtime for the Northern Division Championship.
The Terriers put the game away early outscoring Brown 5-1 in the first period to never trail and cruise to the six-goal win.
Bosko Stankovic (So., Belgrade, Serbia/Sports Gymnasium) started his team's offensive explosion in the first period by netting a man-up goal at the 6:42 mark. Following a score by James McNamara (So., Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) for the equalizer, SFC used back-to-back ejections of McNamara for goals as Alexandar Pantic (Sr., Belgrade, Serbia/Sport High School) and Vuk Vujosevic (Fr., Belgrade, Serbia/Milos Crnjanski) lined balls into the back of the cage at 3:40 adn 2:43, respectively, to make it a 3-1 game.
St. Francis continued to pour it on in the opening period as Sasic snuck behind the Bears' defenders for a natural goal (1:42) and Tamas Toth (Sr., Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) converted on a man-up opportunity with 40 seconds left to put the Terriers comfortably ahead 5-1 after eight minutes of competition.
The lead grew to 6-1 less than two minutes into the second period as Toth buried a shot at 6:10, but Brown rallied back to return the deficit to four when Svetozar Stefanovic (Jr., Belgrade, Serbia/Russian Embassy) slipped in for a point-blank blast at 3:47 to make it 6-2. However, the Terriers responded over two minutes later when Toth torched the Bears for another goal at the 1:14 mark to set the scoreboard at 7-2 for the break.
Brown attempted to chip away at the lead to begin the third period as Stefanovic and Michael Hartwick (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) connected on shots at 7:23 and 6:48, respectively, to shave the lead down to 7-3.
However, SFC returned the lead to five as Sasic (6:13) and Bosko Stankovic (So., Belgrade, Serbia/Sport Gymnasium) converted on man-up chances at 6:13 adn 4:51 to make it 9-4.
Following a goal by Henry Fox (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash./Lakeside School) to trim the deficit to four (9-5), the Terriers ripped off three straight scores.
Alexander Pantic (Sr., Belgrade, Serbia/Milos Crnjanski) started the run by connecting on a man-up chance at 2:40, while Vujosevic (1:26) and Sasic (23 seconds) stung the Bears at even-strength to make it 12-5.
Brown closed out the period as Dean Serure (Jr., Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades) punched in his lone marker of the day with 13 seconds remaining in the period for a 12-6 game with eight minutes of action to remain.
However, the two teams managed to perform at the same level in the fourth period as the Bears were unable to move closer than five goals the rest of the way in suffering the loss.
For SFC, Marko Dzigurski (So. Novi Becej, Serbia/Sredna Skola Novi Becej), Pantic, Vujosevic and Toth each added pairs of goals in support of Sasic, while goalie Luka Raic (Fr., Zagreb, Croatia/X. Gimanzija "Ivan Supek") registered 14 stops in picking up the win.
Brown goalie Walker Shockley (So., Diamond Bar, Calif./Damien) stopped three shots in taking the loss, while Stefanovic led the Bears' scorers with a hat-trick.
