Water Polo Defeats Iona & Connecticut College

New London, CT- Freshman Nick Deaver (Orinda, CA) helped lead the Brown men's water polo to victories over Connecticut College and Iona on Wednesday evening with seven goals, three steals and an assist to improve the Bears to 12-5 overall on the year.

Against Iona, Henry Fox, sophomore James McNamara (Los Angeles, CA) and Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) scored three goals apiece and sophomore Walker Shockley (Diamond Bar, CA) posted 17 saves in the cage to lead the Bears to a 13-6 victory over the Gaels.

The Bears gained a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and extended their lead to 8-4 in the second after Brown outscored Iona 5-3 in the second. After the intermission, Brown went on a 3-1 run in the third and then 2-1 in the fourth to come away with a 13-6 win.

In addition to his three goals, McNamara handed out four assists, nine steals and one ejection drawn. Also scoring for Brown was Nick Deaver with two goals and three steals, and sophomore Grant Villeneauve (Atherton, CA) with one.

Deaver lit up for five goals against Connecticut College to lead Brown to a 16-5 victory against the Camels. The Bears jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the first eight minutes and had an 8-1 scoring outburst in the second quarter. The Bears kept rolling as they went on to push past Connecticut College 3-1 in the third and 2-1 in the fourth to capture a 16-5 victory.

Marcus Gartner added three goals in the win, while Henry Fox and Eric Robb added two goals apiece. Adding one goal was sophomore Chris Culin (Cincinnati, OH), junior Dean Serure (Coral Gables, FL), McNamara and senior Cyrus Mojdehi (La Jolla, CA). Serure also added four assists, a steal and two ejections drawn, while Fox picked up six steals and Villeneuve swiped seven. Rookie goalkeeper Andrew Brown (La Grange, IL) led the defense with six saves in the cage.

The Bears will now travel west to compete against some of the top teams in the country when they take on #15 Santa Clara, #18 Cal Baptist, #18 Air Force, #3 Stanford and #12 UC Davis Oct. 21-23 at Santa Clara.
