Sept. 5, 2007
Providence, RI - With confident leadership and a strong core of upperclassman, Head Men's Cross Country Coach Craig Lake has high expectations for her 2007 squad. The Bears will open up with the BU Invitational on Sept. 7 at Franklin Park, and although the Ivy League is looking to be extremely strong and competitive across the board, Lake is confident that her team is ready to take on the challenge. Despite losing three of their top seven runners from last year, the team hopes to finish among the top three in the league.
One of the Bears' top runners, sophomore Christian Escareno (Mount Prospect, IL) proved to be an outstanding freshman in the League last year, and is expected to have an even better season in 2007. Escareno was Brown's top runner at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships in 2006, as he placed 16th overall with a personal best time of 25:12. Joining Escareno at the top is senior Ari Zamir (Ridgewood, NJ) and senior Ozzie Myers (Chittenango, NY).
"Ari (Zamir) comes through for us in the clutch," said Lake. " He's been injured every year, but is healthy and running very strong right now. Also running quite well for us right now is Ozzie (Myers). He has been extremely consistent for us and we expect him at the top."
Also adding depth to the lineup will be Brian Schmidt (West Hempstead, NY), junior Stephen Chaloner (Merrimack, NH) and senior Ryan Graddy (Del Mar, CA) who have all been consistent performers last season. While Graddy is a returning top seven runner for the squad, Schmidt and Chaloner used the track season to improve and put themselves in a great position to be top runners for Brown this fall. Also looking to impact Brown's swift top seven will be sophomore Duriel Hardy (West Chester, PA) and senior Nick Sarro (Chatham, NY).
After the Bears compete at the BU Invitational on Sept. 7, they will head to the Quinnipiac Invitational on Sept. 21, the Iona Meet of Champions on Sept. 22, and will then run in the New England Championships on Oct. 6. Pre-Nationals are held on Oct. 13, and finally Brown heads to Heps on Oct. 26.
