The 2003 NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships kick off on Friday May 30 in Fairfax, VA on the campus of George Mason University. A total of nine athletes will compete from the men's side while six qualified from the women's team. The Championships will run all day Friday and Saturday as over 1,200 athletes will compete in the hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento beginning June 13. The top five finishers in each event will advance.
Competing for the men will be senior Brad Bowery (Hamden, CT) in the pole vault; Senior Sean Thomas (Wallkill, NY) in the triple jump; Freshman Ray Bobrownicki (Avondale, PA) in the high jump; Sophomore Jeff Gaudette (Biddeford, ME) in the 5,000; Senior Chad Buechel (Upper St. Clair, PA) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase; Freshman Hugh Murphy (Baldwin City, KS) in the javelin; Junior Daveed Diggs (El Cerrito, CA) in the110 hurdles; Sophomore Patrick Tarpy (Yartmouth, ME) in the 1,500 meters; and senior Enda Johnson (Monaghan, Ireland) in the 1,500 meters as well.
Competing for the women will be junior Katie Rowinski (North Kingstown, RI) in the high jump; Sophomore Jill Lynch (Racine, WI) in the shot put; Senior Keely Tharp (Robert, WI) in the 400 meter hurdles; Freshman Brittany Grovey (Hobbs, NM) in the triple jump; and sophomore Meredith Crocker (Wakefield, RI) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase; Senior Lauren Contursi (Flemington, NJ) qualified in the pole vault but decided to end her career at the Heptagonal Championships.
