Men's Track & Field Opens Indoor Season with Alden Invitational

Providence, RI - The Brown men's track and field team opened up its 2008-09 indoor season with four first-place finishers during the Vern Alden Invitational this morning. Senior Eric Wood (Eugene, OR), senior Andrew Chapin (Redmond, WA), senior Bryan Powlen (Kewanna, IN), and senior Mike Woods (Westfield, NJ) each earned titles in their respective events.

The Bears secured first through fourth place finishes in the weight throw today, with Wood bringing home the title with a 56-02.50. Junior Brian Giese (Medford, WI) earned second place with his 49-09.00, followed by freshman Zachary Bahr (Topeka, KS) in third with a 49-07.75 and senior Tyler Prince (Daniels, WV) placed fourth with a 46-02.75.

Chapin earned the tripe jump title with a leap of 46-04.75 and Powlen took the shot put title with a throw of 52-07.50. Bahr also had a strong showing in the shot put, tossing a 41-11.25. Freshman Buddy Yow (Keene, TX) finished in seventh with a 36-05.50.

Bryant University earned first through third in the long jump, but Brown's sophomore AJ Fitzgerald (Harrison, NY) came in seventh with an 18-02.25. Woods claimed first place in the pole vault with a 13-06.00, as senior Jake Ricciardi (Ridgewood, NJ) posted a 13-00.00 for third place.

In the one mile run, Bryant's John Mitton secured first place with a 4:27.34, unattached William Godfrey placed second with a 4:32.13 and Steve Schoenberger from Holy Cross took third with a 4:36.43. Freshman Mike Elnick (Merrick, NY) finished in fourth with a 4:41.73, and Brown senior Sean O'Brien (Westborough, MA) came in second in the 500-meter dash with his 1:06.43.

While Bryant claimed the 300m dash title, Brown's Joseph Mastrangelo (Plainsboro, NJ) finished in second with a 36.42. Also turning in solid performances was John McManus (Chester, NJ) with a fourth place finish with a 37.57, as well as Tom Elnick (Merrick, NY), who earned Brown's top finish in the 3,000m run with a 8:59.08 for third. Also turning in solid times were James Schurz (South Bend, IN) with a 9:00.71 for fifth place, Alex Stern (Potomac, MD) in sixth with a 9:10.25 and Scott Friedlander (Deerfield, IL) with a 9:10.53 for seventh.

The Brown "A" 4x400m relay turned in a 3:07.59 for second place as Bryant's "A" claimed the title with a 3:04.03.
