Men Harriers Finish Fifth At NCAA Regionals

Nov. 12, 2005

Boston, MA-- The men's cross country team traveled northward to Boston this weekend to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Franklin Park. The race covered 10,000m, and was the first time they raced the distance this season. The Bears placed fifth overall, in a tie with Columbia at 181 points. Junior Chris Burke (Dexter, MI) was named with All-Region honors for his outstanding race.

Senior captain Owen Washburn (Amherst, MA) came into the race looking to vie for a spot to nationals but was hampered during the final kilometer with a side stitch, causing him to drop back from his place in the second pack where he had hovered around 12th for most of the race.

"It was hard to watch as a coach, knowing he is an All American-caliber runner," Lake said. "It was the only off day he has had all season, including practices and workouts. It was humbling to see, knowing he deserved to be advancing to Nationals."

Burke picked up some of the slack and came in first for the Bears, placing 17th overall with a time of 30:44.0.

"Burke was solid as always," Lake said. "He was right in the mix, competing right with some very talented men."

Senior Jordan Kinley (Santa Rosa, CA) was next in 33rd (31:12.8), closely followed by sophomore Ari Zamir (Ridgewood, NJ) in 34th (31:14.2). Juniors Nick Neely (Portola Valley, CA) and Neil Hamel (Cumberland, RI) rounded out the top five for the Bears. Neely was 46th in 31:29, and Hamel was 52nd in 31:38.

"For our squad, finishing fifth in the region without our top man is solid," Lake said.

All six men competing in the 8k Coaches' Race improved their times from the New England Championships. The junior varsity men placed their top five in the top 11 of the race.

The Bears will field a limited squad at next weekend's IC4A Championships in New York City to close out the 2005 season.
