Men's Cross Country Captures First Ever Ivy League Heptagonal Championship
Oct. 31, 2003
Van Cortlandt Park, NY - The Brown men's cross country team captured the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship Title for the first time in school history on Friday, Oct. 31 in Van Cortlandt Park, NY. The women's team placed eighth overall.
The Brown men had a balanced 60 points with all five scorers among the top 16 finishers. Columbia was second with 69 points, followed by Yale (85), Dartmouth (90), Princeton (97), Harvard (125), Penn (154) and Cornell (218).
Junior Jeff Gaudette (Biddeford, Maine) led the way for the Bears, finishing fifth in 24:51.0, nearly 10 seconds ahead of last year's champion, Jarrod Shoemaker (Sudbury, Mass.) of Dartmouth. After Gaudette, four Bear runners were in a pack from 12th to 16th, spaced by just six-and-a-half seconds. Junior Pat Tarpy (Yarmouth, Maine) led that group in 25:19.0.
"I couldn't be any prouder of my seniors and juniors," said Brown Coach John Gregorek. "Especially the seniors -- (Matt) Emond, (Michael) DeCoste, (Brendan) O'Keefe. They have been here all four years, trying to get this right and today they led the younger guys."
Brown had finished second three times, behind Dartmouth in 1987 and 1988; and Cornell in 1993. But the closest the Bears had ever come to Heps victory came in 1996, when they finished third, just nine points behind team champion Navy.
