The track and field squad traveled to Storrs, CT Saturday to compete in the annual UCONN Alumni Outdoor Invitational. The team finished second in a field of eight teams, falling only to UCONN. Sophomore Sean O'Brien (Westborough, MA), and junior Nick Sarro (Chatham, NY) both logged wins in their respective events, while others used the meet as an opportunity for speed training, competing in races much shorter than they normally would.
O'Brien finished first in the 800 meter run in 1:55.16, and was followed by senior Christian Tabib (Valparaiso, IN) in fourth in 1:57.10. Freshman Kevin Cervantes (Los Angeles, CA) placed fourth in the 400 meter race in 50.79. Sophomore Matthew Jasmin (Middletown, NY) placed third in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.43.
Freshman Duriel Hardy (West Chester, PA) led a pack of Bears in the 1500 meter run and placed fourth in 4:01.75. Hardy was followed by freshman John Loeser (Weston, CT) in sixth in 4:02.36, and senior Chris Burke (Ann Arbor, MI) in eighth in 4:04.85. Junior Jacob Nettleton (South Orange, NJ) earned third in the 5,000 meter run with a 15:21.96 effort. Sarro was the 3,000 meter steeplechase champion, winning the event in 9:22.99. Senior Neil Hamel (Cumberland, RI) was runner up in 9:47.63.
In the relays, the `B' 4x400 meter relay placed fourth in 44.02. Brown's `C' 4x1600 meter relay team placed fourth in 3:32.14, with the `B' team in fifth with a 3:34.91 effort.
In the jumps, sophomore Mike Woods (Westfield, NJ) placed third in the pole vault with a 14-05.25 leap.
In the throws, freshman Bryan Powlen (Kewanna, IN) placed third in the shot put in 51-6.25. Powelen also placed second in the discus with a 148-09 throw. Sophomore Sam Urlacher (Billings, MT) placed third in the javelin in 174-02.
The Bears will compete next at their 2007 outdoor home opener, the Brown Invitational on Saturday, April 14.
