Storrs, CT - Six members of the Brown men's track & field team earned first-places finishes while competing at the UConn Men's Alumni Track & Field Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Nick Sarro (Chatham, NY), Matt Jasmin (Middletown, NY), Deshaun Mars (Brooklyn, NY), Ikenna Achilihu (Monroe, LA), Eric Wood (Eugene, OR), and Bryan Powlen (Kewanna, IN) all earned titles in their respective events.
Two Bears won events on the track side, as Sarro won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.28, and Jasmin won the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.78. Bruno also had strong finishes from Kevin Cervantes (Los Angeles, CA), who earned second in the 400-meter dash (49.91), Brian Schilder (Milford, NJ) with a second place finish in the 800 (1:57.39). Sarro also turned in a solid effort in the 1,500-meter run, earning second with a 3:57.28 and Brown's 4x400-meter relay team earned second with a 3:25.74 effort.
Four athletes won titles in the field events, as Mars earned first in the long jump with a distance of 22-07.25. Achilihi posted a distance of 50-09.25 in the triple jump for first, and Wood picked up titles in both the shot put (50-01.25) and the hammer throw (168-11). Earning Brown's final title was Powlen, with a distance of 163-04 in the discus throw.
Bruno had many other strong performances, including Joseph Mastrangelo's (Plainsboro, NJ) fourth-place effort in the 200-meter dash (22.58). Earning fifth place finishes were John Haenle (Lockport, NY) in the 800-meter with a 1:58.67, Ozzie Myers (Chittenango, NY) in the 1,500-meter (4:00.26), and Andrew Chapin (Redmond, WA) in the long jump with a 21-00.75.
A few Brown athletes were competing at the Stanford University Invitational over the weekend as well. Sean O'Brien finished in seventh in the 800-meter run "B" sections with a 1:51.72, Christian Escareno came in eighth in the 5,000-meter run section three with a 14:14.17, and Duriel Hardy earned fifth in the 5,000-meter run section four with a 14:21.24.
Next week, the Bears will host the Brown Invitational on Saturday, April 12.
