Dedham, MA - A few throwers from both the men's and women's track & field team competed at the Husky Spring Invitational hosted by Northeastern on Saturday afternoon. Brown had solid performances while getting its outdoor season off to a great start as the Bear combined for five titles.
On the men's side, senior Bryan Powlen (Kewanna, IN) earned the shot put title with a 51-09.75, and also posted a 168-01 in the discus for first place. In the hammer throw, senior Tyler Prince (Daniels, WV) picked up sixth place honors with a 163-11, followed by freshman Zack Bahr (Topeka, KS) with a 136-04 for 13th place.
A first team All-Ivy thrower, junior Danielle Grunloh (Effingham, IL), earned both the shot put and the discus titles on Saturday. Grunloh tossed a 47-09.00 in the shot put and followed it with a 150-10 throw in the discus.
Second team All-Ivy honoree, sophomore Brynn Smith (Saco, ME) also had a great weekend, earning the hammer throw title with a 162-01. She also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 46-00.75. Senior Molly Hawksley (Rumford, RI) earned second place honors in the hammer throw with a 161-03, and freshman Lissa Mazanec (Colby, KS) took 17th place with a 98-08. Mazanec also recorded a 10th place finish in the discus with a 109-06 throw. Junior Katie Wood (St. Joseph, MO) also gave a solid effort in the javelin, recording a 108-06 for ninth place.
Brown is back in action next weekend when the squad splits up to compete at the Stanford Invitational and also the Bryant Invitational.
