Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at Alden Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's and women's track & field teams racked up 16 first-place finishes as the programs hosted the season-opening Alden Invitational on Saturday. 

On the men's side, junior Nik Zemis (New Philadelphia, Ohio) and senior Tosin Oyewole (Elkridge, Md.) went one-two in the 200 meters as they finished in times of 22.65 and 22.88, respectively. Kobina Johnson (Raleigh, N.C.) added a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.56), while Zachary Lanigan (Sydney, Australia) claimed the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:28.76.

Jason Katz (Wyckoff, N.Y.) captured first place in a pair of field events, as he won the long jump at 24-0.75 and the triple jump with a leap of 47-11, while Ryan Laudermilk (Riverside, Calif.) added a first-place showing in the high jump with a cleared height of 6-7.5. Nigel Despinasse (Baton Rouge, La.) and Owen Russell (Attleboro, Mass.) won the shot put (52-5.25) and weight throw (64-7.25).

On the women's side, Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) and May Stern (Providence, R.I.) won the 60 meters and 200 meters, respectively, in times of 7.56 and 25.58. The Bears also earned first-place finishes from Jeanine Noordam (San Jose, Calif.) in the 500 meters at 1:17.95, Elise Claffey (Malvern, Pa.) in the 1,000 meters at 3:02.63, Joelle Feinberg (Port Washington, N.Y.) in the mile at 5:08.89 and Carleen Jeffers (Ridgewood, N.J.) in the 3,000 meters in a time of 9:44.59.

Lewis also collected a win in the field as she topped the triple jump with a leap of 39-4. Rookie Ijeoma Uche (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won the long jump at 18-10.5 and Carly Paul (Fort Collins, Colo.) secured a win in the high jump with a cleared height of 5-9.75. Maxine Offiaeli (South Windsor, Conn.) added a win in the weight throw with a toss of 56-9.25.

Brown is back in action on Saturday, January 13 for the Dartmouth Invitational.
