NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite windy conditions, the Brown women's and men's track & field teams finished second and third, respectively, as the Bears competed at the inaugural Yale Mark Young Invitational over the weekend.
The women racked up 111.16 points to finish in second place, behind only Dartmouth, while the men totaled 99.50 points to claim third behind Dartmouth and Northeastern.
"We had some strong performances this weekend, but we also had a few missed opportunities," said Tim Springfield, Director of Track & Field. We'll need to address that in the three weeks before we come back to Yale for Heps."
Senior Ajani Brown (Frisco, Texas) battled the tough, windy conditions and turned in a first-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 48.76.
"Ajani Brown was impressive in winning the 400m," said Springfield. "He's ready for a breakthrough when we get better conditions."
In the field, freshman Taylor Alarcon (Wilmette, Ill.) enjoyed a breakout performance in the triple jump as the captured first place with a leap of 48-01.75, recording a top-10 mark in program history.
Sophomore Phuong Truong (Tacoma, Wash.) was third overall in the discus with an impressive toss of 161-06.
On the women's side, junior Alex Stanton (Medfield, Mass.) won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.95.
In the field, sophomore Uzoamaka Okoro (Darien, Ill.) claimed first place in the triple jump with a leap of 39-01.75, while senior Brienna Crimmins (Sacramento, Calif.) took third place in the long jump at 18-02.50.
Junior Heather Vermillion (Visalia, Calif.) claimed the hammer throw, as she topped the field of 33 throwers with a toss of 165-02.
Senior Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, Mich.) and sophomore Kebbeh Darpolor (Pecos, Texas) went second and third in the discus, respectively, with throws of 160-07 and 152-11. Buhr also picked up a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 47-01.50.
Freshman Ellie Gravitte (Ridgefield, Conn.) was runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 137-04, while senior Holleigh Bergstrom (Eugene, Ore.) took third at 133-11.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, April 27 when they host the Brown Invitational at Brown Stadium.
