Track & Field Hosts Brown Invitational, Competes at George Mason Invite
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A total of 14 individuals captured first-place finishes as the Brown University men's and women's track & field teams hosted the Brown Invitational on Saturday, while a select group also competed at the George Mason Invite over the weekend.
On the women's side at the Brown Invite, senior Katharine Grimes (Chatham, N.J.) topped a field of 26 runners to claim the mile, crossing the finish line in a time of 5:08.97.
The Bears claimed the first two spots in the long jump, as freshman Shandell Scott (Norfolk, Va.) won with a leap of 17-06.00 and fellow rookie Anna Guo (Pullman, Wash.) was runner-up at 17-05.50.
In the field, sophomore O'Sha Williams (Jamaica, N.Y.) claimed first place in the triple jump with a winning leap of 38-01.25, while sophomore Rachel Van Metre (Swarthmore, Pa.) took second at 37-10.50.
Senior Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, Mich.) continued her dominance in the shot put with a winning toss of 48-00.75. Fellow senior Jessica Eason (Boston, Mass.) was runner-up with a throw of 43-04.50. Sophomore Kebbeh Darpolor (Pecos, Texas) captured first place in the discus with a throw of 165-04, while Buhr also picked up a second-place finish at 158-09.
Junior Heather Vermillion (Visalia, Calif.) won the hammer with a toss of 171-02, while freshman Ellie Gravitte (Ridgefield, Conn.) took second in the javelin with a throw of 134-08. Freshmen Aubryn Samaroo (Grosse Point, Mich.) and Erin Schaeffer (Franklin, Conn.) finished second and third in the high jump, respectively, with a jump-off cleared height of 5-03.00.
On the men's side, the duo of senior Ajani Brown (Frisco, Texas) and Ryan Kelly (Greenwich, Conn.) dominated the sprinting field, as each claimed a win and a second-place finish. Brown won the 100 meters (10.95) and took second in the 200 meters (22.22), while Kelly captured the 200 at 22.08 and was second in the 100 at 10.97.
Freshman Ben Ostrowski (Niantic, Conn.) won the 400 meters with a time of 50.26, while senior Kyler Evitt (Somerville, Mass.) and Arjun Nukal (Los Osos, Calif.) were first and second, respectively, in the 3,000 meters in times of 8:29.68 and 8:32.41.
Brown picked up four individual victories in the field, as junior Courtland Clavette (Asheville, N.C.) won the shot put with a toss of 52-09.25 and sophomore Matthew O'Hara (Riverside, Calif.) captured the hammer at 176-06. Additionally, sophomore Okuoma Idah (Palos Verdes, Calif.) won the long jump at 21-07.50 and Jonathan Padmore (Boston, Mass.) took the triple jump at 46-06.25.
At the George Mason Spring Invitational, junior Henry Tufnell (Cirencester, England) took third in his section of the 800 meters and placed ninth overall with a time of 1:50.65. Senior Tyler Benster won his section of the 800 meters and took 15th overall at 1:51.59.
Junior Alex Stanton (Medfield, Mass.) was sixth overall in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles, crossing in a time of 1:01.17.
The Bears return to action on April 18-19 for the Larry Ellis Invitational on the campus of Princeton University.
