Track & Field Opens 2014 at Yale Invitational
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Five different Bears claimed individual events as the Brown men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed at the Yale Invitational in the first meet of 2014 on Saturday.
On the track, junior Peter Rhodes (Atlanta, Ga.) earned a first-place finish in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles as he crossed the finish line in a time of 8.25, marking the third-best time in the Ivy League this season. Senior Evan Weinstock (Las Vegas, Nev.) turned in a third-place finish in the event with a time of 8.29.
Sophomore Ned Willig (Phoenixville, Pa.) claimed the 800 meters as he topped the 32-runner field at 1:51.81 for the best time in the Ivy League this season, while senior Matthew Bevil (Mary Esther, Fla.) took third at 1:54.33.
The Bears captured the top two spots in the weight throw, led by sophomore Mathew O'Hara (Riverside, Calif.), who placed first overall with a toss of 53-11.25. Sophomore Phuong Truong (Tacoma, Wash.) was runner-up with a toss of 51-10.00.
Weinstock registered a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 22-07.00, while Rhodes finished third in the high jump with a cleared height of 6-06.25. Also in the field, freshman Aaron Comery (Coventry, R.I.) placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 47-07.75.
On the women's side, senior Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, Mich.) captured the shot put as she topped the 28-thrower field with a toss of 45-10.75.
Junior Morayo Akande (Robinson, Ill.) picked up a third-place finish in the high jump with a cleared height of 5-07.00, while sophomore Kebbeh Darpolor (Pecos, Texas) took third in the weight throw with a toss of 51-01.75.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, Jan. 18 when they compete at the Battle for Beantown in Cambridge, Mass.
