Our meet at St. Mary's University College was very successful. We teamed up with Dartmouth to defeat our hosts, 16-12, which an extremely old-school scoring system: 1 point for each event winner. Brown had 6 event winners, Dartmouth added 7, and Brown and Dartmouth joined forces to win 3 of the 4 relays. Our winners were: Lacey Craker (Hammer), Courtland Clavette (Discus), Tory Buhr (Discus), Peter Rhodes (Long Jump), Morayo Akande (High Jump), and Ajani Brown (400). Ajani spent time after his race signing autographs for kids.
St. Mary's is home base for many international track athletes—I recognized two Olympians working out on the track when we were practicing, Australia's Collis Birmingham and England's Andrew Osagie. Both came out to watch our meet as well. Great atmosphere and facilities.
After the meet St. Mary's hosted a dinner for all competitors and we were presented with a nice trophy. Lots of t-shirts were traded and our athletes had a chance to get to know many of their English counterparts.
The next day we left suburban London and moved into London proper, staying in dorms at the University of London. We spent the next two days touring London in small groups. Among the stops: the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, The Tate Modern Art Museum, Borough Market, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, etc. etc. Many of us went to see plays at various West End theatres as well.
It was a fantastic two weeks in the U.K. Our hosts were uniformly gracious and we met some great people. We also got to see some amazing natural and historical sites. And we got introduced to two fantastic cities in Dublin and London. And, of course, there was the hurling.
