PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown track & field team will send eight qualifiers to the 2013 NCAA East Preliminary that will take place May 23-25 at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.
For the men, John Spooney (Northfield, Ohio) will compete in both the 100 and 200 meters and Erik Berg (Seattle, Wash.) will run the 1,500 meters, while Kenneth Thompson (Riverdale, N.Y.) will take part in the triple jump and Courtland Clavette (Asheville, N.C.) will compete in the discus.
On the women's side, Alexandra Stanton (Medfield, Mass.) will run the 400-meter hurdles, while Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, Mich.), Lacey Craker (Baraboo, Wis.) and Kebbeh Darpolor (Pecos, Texas) will participate in the discus.
Spooney, who will open with the first round of the 100 meters Thursday at 6:55 p.m., is coming off his third straight Ivy League title in the event as he crossed in a time of 10.37 for All-Ivy First Team accolades. Spooney, who set a school record with the winning time, is just the fourth person in league history to win three straight titles in the 100 meters. Additionally, Spooney finished second in the 200 meters with a school record-breaking time of 20.85. This marks Spooney's third NCAA East Regional qualification in as many seasons.
Berg, who will run in the first round of the 1,500 meters Thursday at 6 p.m., looks to return to the national stage after advancing to the NCAA Championships in the event at last year's regional meet. Berg placed third overall in the 1,500 meters at the league championships as he crossed the finish line in a time of 3:51.27.
In the field, Thompson will compete in the triple jump Saturday at 1 p.m. and Clavette will throw the discus Thursday at 10 a.m. Thompson placed third in the triple jump at the Ivy Heptagonal Championships with a leap of 50-08.00, while Clavette will look to continue an impressive sophomore campaign after taking third at Heps with a toss of 172-04.
Stanton, who will run in the 400-meter hurdles Thursday at 4:30 p.m., placed third overall in the event at the Ivy Championships with a time of 59.88.
Buhr, Craker and Darpolor will compete in the discus Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Buhr recently captured the discus title at the Ivy Heptagonal Championships with a winning toss of 159-08 to earn First Team All-Ivy accolades. Craker and Darpolor will also be in contention after the duo placed third and fourth, respectively, at Heps with throws of 153-05 and 150-06.
The qualifiers from the East and West regions will compete in the NCAA Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
