Kingston, RI- The Brown University men's track & field team competed at the University of Rhode Island's Sorlien Invitational yesterday afternoon. Despite it being just its second meet of the indoor season and not competing since the Alden Invitational on Dec. 3, the Bears brought home three titles and earned some solid marks/times.
Sophomore standout John Spooney captured the 60m dash title in 6.85 seconds and freshman Hunter Warwick posted a sixth place finish in the 60m hurdles with an 8.82. Leading the Bears in the 200m dash was sophomore Ajani Brown with a time of 23.19 seconds.
"It was nice to see Nate Elder open his season with a win," said Tim Springfield. "We're where we should be with our general fitness, now it's a matter of putting the more specific work in place."
Sophomore Jonathan Padmore placed seventh in the long jump with a 21-08.75. and rookie Peter Rhodes earned second in the high jump with a personal record height of 6-06 (1.98m). Junior Daniel Smith brought home the shot put title with a 50-00.50 distance, while sophomore Evan Weinstock came in sixth with a personal record 13.16m (43-08.00). Both Rhodes are Weinstock are gearing up for the indoor heptathlon, their personal record performances in the high jump and shot put, respectively, are early indications of the progress in training they have made this fall and winter.
The Bears will compete in the Harvard Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 21 and then the New Balance Games on Friday, Jan. 27.
