Indoor Track & Field Season Outlook: Throws

Providence, RI- A perennial strength of the Bears, head coach Michelle Eisenreich's throws squad looks to be strong once again this year. With the return of senior standout Brynn Smith (Saco, ME) for the women, and sophomore Daniel Smith (Saco, ME) on the men's side, the Bears will look to build on its success from last season and contend for a Heptagonal Championship.

THE RETURNERS

Smith had an outstanding season for the women's squad in 2010 and looks to continue her dominance in the throwing events this year. During the indoor season she threw an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 50'8.25" in the shot and set a school record in the weight throw with a toss of 60'2.5". At the Indoor Heptagonal Championship, she finished second behind teammate Daniel Grunloh '10.

Sophomore Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, MI) had an outstanding freshman campaign. She was an ECAC qualifier in the shot put and finished fourth at the Indoor Heps with a season best throw of 46'4.25".

Fellow sophomore Lacey Craker (Baraboo, WI) proved she was ready to continue the Brown tradition of success in the weight throw during her freshman year. In her first season ever of throwing the weight she posted a mark of 50'3.5" at the indoor Heps. She has already eclipsed that mark this year with a toss of 52'4".

The men will be led by two outstanding sophomores. By the end of his freshman year, Dan Smith (Saco, ME) found his groove with the 16lb shot with a sixth place finish at Heps, an IC4A qualifying mark, and personal best of 53'8". Determined to make his mark in the league, he has already set a new PR of 53'11.75"

A first time hammer thrower, Alex Lipinsky (Boardman, OH) proved he will be force to be reckoned with in the future. At the outdoor Heps, he finished ninth and qualified for the IC4A championships with a throw of 174'6". He has big expectations for the 2011 indoor season as he applies his hammer knowledge to the weight.

THE FRESHMEN

In addition to these returning athletes, the throws squad has added a depth of freshman talent.

Joe Doau joins the team from Santa Monica, CA and has a 12lb PR throw of 61'8". A California state finalist, He will look to make an immediate impact in the shot put this indoor season.

Jessica Eason joins the team from Mansfield, MA. She was the Massachusetts state champion and New England runner up in the shot put with a throw of 42'7.
