Kingston, RI- The Brown University men's and women's track & field team competed at the Sorlien Invitational hosted in the Mackal Field House at the University of Rhode Island this weekend. Many of the Bears' athletes competed this weekend and were able to shake off some rust since their last meet on Dec. 4.
The men's squad finished in sixth this afternoon with a total of 44 points. Host Rhode Island finished in first with 276.50, followed by UMass Amherst (117.50) and UMass Dartmouth (74). For complete results click HERE.
In his first collegiate indoor meet, freshman Matt Bevil won a Brown title today in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:32.48. Sophomore Daniel Smith also brought home a title in the shot put with a strong toss of 53-09.75 (16.40m). Rookie Joe Daou finished behind Smith with a fifth place throw of 44-06.25 (13.57m).
Evan Weinstock also turned in some great results, placing in the top eight in three events. He earned sixth place in the long jump with a 21-00.75 (6.42m), seventh in the 55m hurdles with a time 8.34 seconds, and sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 23.26 seconds. Another rookie that had a solid debut was John Spooney, who finished the 55m dash in 6.49 seconds for second place.
Alexander Lipinsky had a fifth place effort in the weight throw with a toss of 45-11.75 (14.00m).
On the women's side, senior Brynn Smith won the Bears' only title on Friday afternoon with a solid 47-08.50 (14.54m) in the shot put. Sophomore Victoria Buhr followed close behind with a third place toss of 43-02.25 (13.16m) and rookie Jessica Eason finished in seventh with a 40-03.50 (12.28m).
Smith also earned second place in the weight throw for the Bears with a toss of 56-02.50 (17.13m) and sophomore teammate Lacey Craker came in ninth with a 47-09.00 (14.55m).
In the long jump, senior Rachel Biblo finished fourth overall with a leap of 16-08.75 (5.10m) and senior Natasha Smith followed behind in 11th place with a 14-04.50 (4.38m).
Brown Junior Susan Scavone finished in second place in the 55m hurdles in a swift 8.51 seconds, and freshman newcomer Nealy Williams came in sixth place with a time of 9.40 seconds.
Senior Brielle Beaudette had a strong performance in the 500m run finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:20.23, and Williams followed behind in 11th place with a 1:26.37. Natasha Smith earned 10th in the 200m dash crossing the line in 27.73 seconds.
