Track & Field Opens 2009-10 Season with Vern Alden Invitational
Providence, RI- The Brown track & field teams opened its
2009-10 indoor season hosting its annual Vern Alden Invitational at
the Olney Margolies Athletic Center over the weekend. Both squads
had some great individual performances in their debut, as many
Brown Bears claimed titles in their respective events.
Leading the throwers today was senior Bryan Powlen, who had a solid
day with an indoor personal record. Powlen captured the shot put
title with a throw of 16.91m, as teammate Alexander Lipinsky
followed with a 12.87m toss for second place. In the weight throw,
Brown claimed first-through-third place finishes as Zach Bahr
earned the title with a 16.85m throw, nearly a six-foot personal
best. Brian Giese came in second place with a 14.96m toss and
Alexander Lipinsky earned third with a solid 13.76m. Senior
Reginald Cole earned the long jump title with a 6.76m leap, as well
as the triple jump title with a 14.47m.
In the running events, sophomore Sammy Smith won the 55m dash in
6.71 seconds, and he also garnered sixth place honors in the 300m
dash with a 38.11. Erik Berg finished in fifth place in the 3,000m
run, and Vincent Sghiatti earned second place in the 55m hurdles in
8.32 seconds.
