Shamasdin Advances to Round of 32 in NCAA Singles Action

COLLEGE STATION, TX - Senior co-captain Adil Shamasdin (Pickering, ONT), ranked 86th in the nation, upset the 12th-ranked singles player in the country, Doug Stewart, of the University of Virginia in NCAA Singles First Round Action on Wednesday, May 25th, at Texas A&M University. With the victory, Shamasdin posted his 214th career victory (combined) to become Brown's all-time leader for career victories (overall).

Shamasdin fell behind, losing the first set, 6-2. However, he dominated the second set, earning a 6-0 score to force a third set. Serving first, Shamasdin went up 1-0, but Stewart held serve to tie the set at 1-1. Shamasdin held serve to take a 2-1 lead and then broke Stewart to go up 3-1. Stewart won the next three games to take a 4-3 lead. Shamasdin won the final three games, breaking Stewart twice to earn the 6-4 win, clinching the match.

Shamasdin will face #3 Jesse Witten, of Kentucky, tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. in the Round of 32. In the afternoon, he and junior Philip Charm (Concord, MA) will face Scott Brown and Jason Pinsky of Vanderbilt in the First Round of the Doubles Tournament.
