After a grueling non-league schedule, Brown (8-9, 2-0 Ivy) opened its 2002 Ivy League season on the road with a 5-2 sweep of both Princeton and Penn. Along the way, Brown coach Jon Choboy earned his 100thcareer Division I victory.
The Bears grabbed the double point against Princeton with junior co-captain Chris Drake (Needham, MA) and Justin Natale (Flushing, NY) winning 8-2 at number one singles, and freshman Adil Shamasdin (Pickering, ONT) and senior co-captain Nick Malone (Greystones, Ireland) earning an 8-2 victory at number two doubles.
Brown captured four of six singles matches against the Tigers, with Malone earning with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number two, and sophomore Jamie Cerretani (Reading, MA) coming away with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win at third singles. Drake was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at number four, and Shamasdin captured a 6-3, 6-3 victory at fifth singles.
Choboy's team started out the Penn match down 1-0 after losing the doubles point. Cerretani and Nick Goldberg (Albuquerque, NM) were the lone winners at third doubles.
The Bears came into the singles with a vengeance, winning five of the six matches to claim a 5-2 victory over the Quakers. Malone (6-1, 6-2), Cerretani (6-2, 6-3), Drake (6-1, 6-0), Shamasdin (7-5, 6-2) and Goldberg (3-6, 6-3, (8)) were each victorious for the Bears.
