February 7, 2001 Brown opened its 2001 season with a 4-3 victory over Rutgers at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Bears lost the doubles point, but captured four of six singles matches. Junior Brendon Malone (Greystones, Ireland) opened with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number one, while freshman Ben Brier (Dartmouth, MA) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at number four. Freshman Alex Walden (Bradenton, FL) earned a 6-4, 6-2 decision at number five, and freshman Kris Goddard (Littleton, CO) came away with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at number six.
