Thomas & Ratnam Claim ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Title; Advance to National Indoors

Philadelphia, PA - Senior Eric Thomas (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore Basu Ratnam (Oyster Bay, NY) won six straight doubles matches, including victories over three seeded doubles teams, to earn the 2006 ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Title. This marks the second straight year that a Brown team claimed the ITA Regional Doubles Title, after Phil Charm '06 (Concord, MA) and senior Dan Hanegby (Herzliya, Israel) won last year's title. The ITA Regional Championships were held October 20-24 at Penn. Thomas and Ratnam posted an 8-3 win over second-seeded Hanegby and sophomore Chris Lee (Sudbury, MA) in the semi-finals, before posting an 8-5 win over Michael James and Adam Slagter of Penn State in the Finals. By virtue of their victory, Thomas and Ratnam have advanced to the National Indoors, which will be held November 2-5,2006, at the Racquet Club of Columbus, OH, hosted by Ohio State.

Thomas and Ratnam began their Championship run with an 8-1 win over ninth-seeded Ryan Berger and Bradley Hunter of Penn State. They cruised past Yules Hadisubroto and Mike Rockman of Buffalo in the round of 32, before handing fourth-seeded Jason Pinsky and Eric Riley of Penn an 8-3 loss. In the Quarterfinals, the duo defeated Mark Clemente and Jonathan Wong of Columbia, 8-5, setting up a semi-final match against teammates Hanegby and Lee. Ratnam and Thomas dispatched of their second-seeded teammates, 8-3, to advance to the finals against James and Slagter.
