Bears Defeat St. Bonaventure and Cornell, Before Falling to Penn State in ECAC Championships

FLUSHING, NY - The Brown men's tennis team (2-1) started off strong at the ECAC Championship, but was upset by Penn State for the second straight year, as the Bears were eliminated from the tournament prior to Monday's final.

Seeded second in the ECAC Championships, which were held at the site of the US Open, the Bears rolled over their first two opponents, before falling to the Nittany Lions. Brown defeated St. Bonaventure, 6-1, on Friday, Cornell, 5-2, on Saturday, and lost to Penn State, 4-3, on Sunday.

Against St. Bonaventure, the Bears swept the doubles point with the duo of Nicholas Goldberg (Albuquerque, NM) and Adil Shamasdin (Pickering, ONT) picking up an 8-2 win at #1. Philip Charm (Concord, MA) and Richard Moss (Johannesburg, South Africa) followed at #2 with an 8-5 win, and Saurabh Kohli (Colaba, Mumbai, India) and Eric Thomas (Cincinnati, OH) earned an 8-2 win at #3. In singles action, Brown won the top three matches, with Goldberg leading the way with a 7-6, 6-3 win at #1. Shamasdin picked up a 7-6, 7-6 win at #2, while Thomas earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #3. Luke Tedaldi (West Newton, MA) earned a win at #5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, while Michael Scherer (Potomac, MD) won at #6, 6-2, 6-0.

Against Cornell, Brown started the match by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. Charm and Moss won at #2, 8-5, and Thomas and Kohli won at #3, 8-2. In singles action, the Bears dropped two matches, but one at numbers two-five for the 5-2 victory. Shamasdin earned a 6-0, 6-3 win at #2, and Thomas won at #3, 6-1, 6-2. Kohli picked up a 6-3, 7-6 win at #4, while Moss won at #5, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (6).

Finally, against Penn State, the #3 seed in the Tournament, the Bears dropped a heartbreaker, falling 4-3. Brown won the doubles point to start the match, taking #2, 8-5 (Charm and Moss) and #3, 8-1 (Kohli and Thomas). However, Penn State won four of the six singles matches to steal the win and advance to the finals. Goldberg earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at #1 singles and Thomas won at #3, 6-4, 6-2.

The Bears continue action on October 21, when they travel to Virginia Tech for the 2004 Omni Regional Championships.
