The Brown men's tennis team dominated the Northeast Intercollegiate Tennis Championship on the Brown campus, September 27-30, winning the A Flight and B Flight Singles championships, and the Flight A and Flight B Doubles titles. 15 teams from throughout the Northeast competed in the tournament.
Sophomore Jamie Cerretani (Reading, PA) led the way for the Bears, capturing the A Singles title with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Brown teammate, freshman Adil Shamasdin (Pickering, Ontario). Along the way, Ceretani defeated Vermont, 6-4, 6-2, junior Chris Drake (Needham, MA) from Brown, 6-2, 6-2, and Brown sophomore Ben Brier (Dartmouth, MA), 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 in the semifinals. Shamasdin was finalist by virtue of wins over Rhode Island (6-1, 7-6), Fairleigh Dickinson (6-1, 6-3), Assumption by default, and Brown senior captain Nick Malone (6-4, 6-1).
In the B Flight Singles, freshman Nick Goldberg (Albuquerque, NM) earned a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Brown teammate junior Jon Argo (Ocala, FL) to win the title. Goldberg also registered wins over Columbia (6-4, 6-1), Boston College (6-4, 6-0), Assumption (6-2, 6-0) and Harvard (6-1, 6-2). Argo earned wins over Rhode Island (6-1-6-2), Columbia (7-5, 6-1), Harvard (6-2, 7-5) and Columbia (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) to reach the Finals.
The A Flight Doubles title was captured by the Brown doubles team of Cerretani and Malone, who defeated Brown's Brier and Drake, 8-4 in the finals. In B Flight Doubles, the Bears' team of sophomore Andy Walden (Bradenton, FL) and freshman Branko Kolvek (Dundas, Ontario) won the title with an 8-4 victory over Harvard.
