Men's Tennis Falls To Wake Forest, 4-3, In First Round Of NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament

DURHAM, N.C. - The Brown men's tennis season came to an end Saturday afternoon when the 46th ranked Bears dropped a 4-3 decision to the 28th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the opening round of the 2003 NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The Bears complete the 2002-2003 season with a 20-5 overall record, while Wake Forest advances with a 14-8 record.

The Deamon Deacons captured the doubles point and pulled out to a 3-0 advantage in singles play. Brown reeled off three consecutive wins to knot the match. Senior Chris Drake (Needham, MA) earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Derrick Spice at second singles. At number four singles, Brown's Zachary Pasanen (North Andover, MA) needed a second set tie-breaker to defeat Trent Brendon, 6-4, 7-6 (6). Junior Nicholas Goldberg (Albuquerque, NM) captured a 6-4, 6-1 win for the Bears at number five.

With the match score tied at 3-3, Wake Forest's David Loewenthal upended junior Jamie Cerretani (Reading, MA) in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to lift the Demon Deacons to their first-ever NCAA Tournament win. In the final set, Loewenthal grabbed a 4-0 advantage, but Cerretani responded with three straight games to pull within 4-3. Loewenthal then held serve twice for the victory.

Wake Forest advances to Sunday's second round match and will face Duke at 1:30 p.m.
